About the course

'Teaching English to refugees and displaced learners' is a free four-week self-study training course, divided into three-hour modules. You can complete all four modules any time before 3rd July. If you have completed the module 'Getting started' on another course with us, you don't have to repeat it.

Module 1: An introduction to trauma and its effects on the classroom

This module introduces the effects of trauma on learning and behaviour in the classroom. You'll also explore strategies for supporting learners' physical and emotional safety during lessons.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

- give a definition of trauma and list the main types of trauma which can affect learners in your classrooms
- recognise the effects of certain types of trauma on learning and behaviour in your classrooms
- create physical and emotional safety for these learners in your classroom through practical teaching strategies.

Module 2: Teaching with minimal resources

This module explores ways of using learners as a teaching resource, through creativity, personalisation and learner-generated resources.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- identify the resources available in your classroom
- use a variety of activities when teaching with limited resources
- analyse the advantages and disadvantages of different activities
- adapt an activity for a particular teaching context
- you'll be able to be more resourceful when faced with a low-resource context.

Module 3: Dealing with very challenging behaviour

This module provides practical trauma-informed classroom strategies to manage distressed behaviour.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you’ll be able to:

- recognise that behaviour is a communication of need and that challenging behaviour can be viewed as distressed behaviour
- explain the links between trauma and some types of behaviour
- create physical and emotional safety for these learners in your classroom through practical teaching strategies
- implement some practical trauma-informed classroom strategies to manage distressed behaviour.

I have enrolled in one of the courses. However, whenever I try to view it in MYPORTFOLIO, the link stops working.
I tried the backup link provided here and it's the same error message.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Abdulwahab.93

Have you tried logging out , making sure you are logged out in all  devices and perhaps clear cache. this usually sorts out access problems. If not can you take a screen shot and contact the technical team through the help button on the site?

I hope that sorts it and you can continue the course,

Hi,

I am accessing this from two different MacBook Air machines. I am struggling with both.
When I use Firefox, I struggle to access my course.
When I use Safari, access itself is easy, but my work does not save. I had to do the same unit four times before it auto-saved. On the plus side, I got 100% for it.
Which browsers work best for this platform?

Thanks

Hi Gwenna,

That sounds very frustrating for you. Can you try to see if Chrome works better? If not can you post your question to the technical help team on the platform, there is a yellow 'help' button on course pages, they  may be able to give you specific technical advice. Hope you get onto the course reliably!
